IAFI pushes 6G standards and spectrum harmony at the ITU
IAFI is pressing the ITU for global 6G standards and spectrum harmonisation, shaping the IMT-2030 framework before 3GPP work and WRC-27 set the terms.
5G & 6GWhy it matters
- IAFI is advocating global 6G standards and spectrum harmonisation at the ITU, Communications Today reports.
- The ITU's IMT-2030 framework will define 6G ahead of expected deployments around 2030.
- 3GPP is expected to begin 6G study work in the 2025-2027 window.
- The WRC-27 conference cycle is expected to address candidate spectrum bands for IMT-2030.
The story
The International AIF (IAFI) has taken its campaign for global 6G standards and spectrum harmonisation directly to the International Telecommunication Union, arguing that the next technology cycle should not repeat the fragmentation of the last one.
The move, reported by Communications Today, puts the body at the centre of the earliest and least glamorous phase of the 6G story: the paperwork. Standards and spectrum decisions made at the ITU over the coming years will decide whether 6G arrives as one coherent global technology or a patchwork of regional variants.
That question is not academic. The industry still carries the scars of 5G's fractured spectrum landscape, where operators in different markets deployed mid-band and mmWave at frequencies that rarely matched. Roaming suffered, equipment costs stayed high, and vendors built regional SKUs rather than one global radio. Harmonised spectrum is the single cheapest way to avoid a rerun.
What is IAFI actually asking for?
According to the report, the body's work at the ITU focuses on two tracks:
- Advancing the technical groundwork for 6G standards through the ITU's standardisation and study-group processes, alongside the work already under way in 3GPP and regional bodies.
- Building international consensus on spectrum harmonisation, so that candidate 6G bands line up across markets before national regulators auction them.
The ITU's role here is procedural but decisive. Its radiocommunication sector coordinates global frequency allocations, and its IMT roadmap — the framework that defined 5G as IMT-2020 — will define what counts as 6G, and on which bands, well before any operator lights up a commercial network.
Why the timeline matters
6G standardisation is already moving. The ITU has set out its vision for IMT-2030, and 3GPP expects to begin its first 6G study items in the 2025-2027 window, with early commercial deployments targeted around 2030. Bodies like IAFI that feed positions into the ITU now are effectively writing the constraints within which 3GPP will later work.
Spectrum is the longer game. WRC-27, the next World Radiocommunication Conference cycle, is expected to address candidate bands for IMT-2030. Positions taken now — in study groups, in regional preparatory meetings, in filings like IAFI's — determine what is even on the table when delegates convene.
The body's argument is presumably familiar to anyone who sat through the 5G era: harmonised bands mean cheaper devices, easier roaming and a bigger addressable market for vendors. It's an argument regulators generally accept in principle and resist in practice, since national spectrum policy remains stubbornly national.
The commercial reality check
No operator has a 6G network. No vendor has a shippable 6G product. Everything currently branded 6G — research chips, testbeds, prototype radios — belongs in the lab, not the business case. What IAFI is doing at the ITU is the unglamorous work that decides whether the 2030 deployment wave is global or regional.
The measure of its success won't be announcements. It will be whether the IMT-2030 framework that emerges from the ITU names a common set of spectrum bands that regulators from Delhi to Brussels to Washington can actually live with.
Expect the real verdicts at WRC-27 and in the first 3GPP 6G releases later this decade. That's when we find out whether harmonisation was a principle or just a preference.
