Jio Says Its 6G Move Will Be a Software Upgrade, Not a Ripping Out of 5G
Reliance Jio chairman Akash Ambani says the operator's move to 6G will be a software upgrade, staking its standalone 5G architecture against a new hardware cycle.
Why it matters
- Akash Ambani says Jio's 6G transition will be a software upgrade
- ITU's IMT-2030 framework governs 6G; commercial networks not expected before around 2030
- 3GPP's first 6G specifications are expected around 2028-2029
- Jio launched 4G in 2016 on an all-IP, software-centric architecture
- No 6G standard exists yet; the claim concerns architecture, not a rollout date
The story
Reliance Jio will move to 6G through a software upgrade rather than a hardware replacement, Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, has said. The claim, made in remarks reported by TelecomTalk, positions India's largest operator to reach the next generation without repeating the capital cycle that built its 5G network.
Ambani's statement carries weight because of how Jio built its 5G estate. The operator runs a standalone 5G core and deployed 5G across India at a pace few markets matched, using equipment supplied largely by Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung alongside its own development work. If that architecture is already software-defined, the argument goes, the step to 6G becomes an upgrade path rather than a rebuild.
What does the claim actually change?
For now, it changes the narrative, not the network. No 6G standard exists yet. The 3GPP has only begun the study phase for what will become Release 20 and beyond, and the ITU is still shaping the requirements that will define IMT-2030, the official name for 6G. Commercial 6G networks are not expected before the end of the decade in the most aggressive vendor timelines, and most operators plan around 2030 or later.
So a software-upgrade promise in 2025 is a statement of intent about architecture. It tells investors and rivals that Jio intends its 5G investment to carry forward. It does not commit the company to a rollout date, a spectrum purchase or a vendor contract for 6G.
The commercial reality behind the software claim
Software-led generation jumps are a vendor talking point as much as an operator strategy. Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei all market cloud-native cores that can, in principle, be reprogrammed for new radio interfaces and new features. The fine print matters. New spectrum bands above those used for 5G, wherever standards bodies place them, will still need new radios. Chipsets in handsets will need to change. A software upgrade on the core softens the cost curve. It does not erase it.
Jio, however, is better placed than most to make the argument. Its network was designed from the outset as all-IP and software-centric, a decision dating to its 4G launch in 2016. The company has since pushed its own stack, working with domestic partners and pushing for Indian-made telecom technology, an alignment with government policy that has won it support and, at times, spectrum terms favourable to its balance sheet.
The standards clock and what comes next
The ITU's IMT-2030 framework sets the outer boundary of the story. Requirements work is under way, 3GPP study items will firm up through 2026 and 2027, and the first release of 6G specifications is expected around 2028 or 2029. Equipment availability would follow, and mass-market devices later still. That places any real Jio 6G switch-on in the 2030 window, consistent with Ambani's framing of a transition rather than a launch.
What does this change for Jio subscribers? Nothing yet. 5G service, coverage and tariffs continue as they are. The significance is financial and strategic: the chairman of India's largest telecom operator has put on record that the path from 5G to 6G should not demand a new national build-out, and his company's network design will now be measured against that promise as standards harden toward the end of the decade.
